  7. Brief Description
  8. =================
  9.  
  10. This program is an NNTP based offline newsreader designed to 
  11. allow easy, user friendly access to the Usenet newsgroups.  
  12. It allows posting and replys to postings on the various 
  13. newsgroups in an as easy as possible way.  It requires little
  14. configuration and (nearly) no technical expertise to run
  15. (I hope).

  18. Features
  19. ========
  20.  
  21.   • Doesn't require any programs to be run before reading
  22.     news, or after posting a message.
  23.     { It accesses the files directly from !MailDir }
  24.   • Adds the signature file to the post automatically
  25.   • Full quoting of messages being replied to.
  26.   • Has no limit on the number of articles in a newsgroup.
  27.   • Uses the ExtEdit protocol to edit a posting, allowing you
  28.     to use your favorite editor.
  29.   • Correctly replies to posts with a Followup-To: line.
  30.   • Can run from any filing system.
  31.   • Loads the entire file, so that the harddisc is not thrashed 
  32.     to pieces and it loads extremely fast.

  36. Disadvantages
  37. =============
  38.  
  39.   • Requires as much memory as the size of the DemNews file,
  40.     plus 160K for the program, plus 2% of DemNews file for an
  41.     index. (eg 500K newsfile requires 500K+160K+10K = 670K)

  43.     
  44. Features (aka Bugs)
  45. ===================
  46.  
  47.   • Sometimes, a few articles can be grouped into a wierd 
  48.     group, this happens when there are multiple entries on the 
  49.     Newsgroups: line, and this article appears before the ones
  50.     in the "normal" group.
  51.   • After a mode change from a large mode to a small
  52.     mode, the windows can be separated.  Clicking on
  53.     the title bar fixes this.
  54.   • No checking is done for disc space when copying
  55.     the news file into a subdirectory of !News, this
  56.     can cause problems if !TCPIPUser and !News are 
  57.     on different filing systems.

  60. Instructions
  61. ============
  62.  
  63. These instructions are designed to provide a step by step
  64. guide to running the program, rather than a feature by feature
  65. guide.
  66.

  68. 1.  Double click on the !News application.
  69.  
  70.     The "Load file" window will open, and a list of available
  71.     newsfiles will be displayed, initally this will display
  72.     "folder.DemNews"
  73.   
  74.      Options available:
  75.      Auto copy  - automatically rename the DemNews file into 
  76.                   !News.news with a unique name (eg 150994)
  77.      Auto Index - automatically save the index generated with
  78.                   the newsfile, so that the index does not have
  79.                   to be calculated again (and read/unread articles
  80.                   are stored).
  81.  
  82.     Errors:
  83.     • List displays "<none>"
  84.       1. There is no downloaded news to be displayed, or
  85.       2. The filer has not seen the !MailDir application (It 
  86.          is part of !TCPIP), or 
  87.       3. Your downloaded news is not called DemNews - edit the 
  88.          config file to change this.
  89.        
  90.     • "Insufficent memory - Current=nnnnK, Needed=yyyyK"
  91.       This means that the computer currently does not have enough
  92.       memory to load the DemNews file.
  93.       Possible solutions 
  94.       - Quit some other applications, 
  95.       - Reboot the machine, (skipping any autobooting 
  96.         applications refer to the User Guide)
  97.       - Use an editor to cut the DemNews file into 2 (or more) 
  98.         parts.
  99.       - Use the SplitNews file (inside the !News application)
  100.         which will automatically cut a file into multiple parts      
  101.   
  102. 2.  Double click on the newsfile that you wish to load,
  103.  
  104.     The main window will open, and an hourglass will be 
  105.     displayed for a short while and then the list of groups 
  106.     will be displayed in the top window.
  107.  
  108.     Errors:
  109.     • "The index file appears to be corrupt..." this means
  110.       that the checks in the index file have failed, it will
  111.       be deleted and recalculated.  If the Auto Index option
  112.       is set then the new index will be saved.
  113.  
  114. 3.  Double click on the newsgroup that you wish to view, and
  115.     then on the article that you wish to view.
  116.  
  117. 4.  To view the next article, either Doubleclick on the next
  118.     article to be viewed, or press Ctrl-N.
  119.    
  120.     The next article will be displayed, and the top window 
  121.     scrolls down if required.
  122.  
  123. 5.  To create a user select {Iconbar menu} ⇨ Create User 
  124.     and enter your alias (username) in the first field
  125.     (eg tim@mobius.demon.co.uk).  Press RETURN and enter your
  126.     real name in the name field (eg Timothy Kimber).  In the
  127.     last field enter the location of your sig file, if this
  128.     is blank, or left at the default value then no sig file
  129.     will be included when you post an article.
  130.    
  131. 6.  Next select the user to be used when posting, choose
  132.     the correct user in the {Iconbar menu} ⇨ User ⇨ {user list}
  133.     
  134.     The Create User menu option changes to Amend User, and the
  135.     user details can be amended.
  136.     (to create another user - deselect the current user and
  137.     the Create User will become available).
  138.    
  139. 7.  Next check on the {Window menu} ⇨ Options ⇨ Site name menu
  140.     that the site name is correct for your site, edit it if
  141.     your site name is different.
  142.    
  143. 8.  Save the options and the users in the Config file by
  144.     selecting the {Window menu} ⇨ Options ⇨ Save Options
  145.    
  146. 9.  To post a reply to an article, press the menu button, and 
  147.     select "Post Reply".
  148.     When the window appears, cut out any quoted lines that you
  149.     do not wish to quote and type in your follow up text.
  150.     Then 
  151.       A) If using a ExtEdit aware editor (it will say 
  152.          (News).Post.Article at the top of the editor window)
  153.          then close the window and reply "Save" to the 
  154.          Save,Discard,Cancel query.
  155.     Otherwise 
  156.       B) If a "Drag here" window appears, then drag the
  157.          save icon into the "Drag here" window.
  158.  
  159. 10. To post an entirely new article, then press the menu 
  160.     button and select "Post", fill in the relevant fields in 
  161.     the header (Newsgroups, Subject, and Organisation), the 
  162.     text and then save as in step (4).
  163.    
  164. 11. To view articles with/without headers then press the menu
  165.     button, and select {Window menu} ⇨ Options ⇨ Headers
